Opinion | There’s a Name for What Trump Is Doing to Trans People: Denationalizing

In recent years, the transgender community has faced increasing discrimination and attacks on their rights. From bathroom bills to military bans, the Trump administration has consistently targeted transgender individuals, seeking to erase their identities and strip away their rights. This systematic campaign against the transgender community has a name: denationalizing.

Denationalizing is the act of denying a person’s identity and rights as a citizen of a particular nation. In the case of transgender individuals, denationalizing involves stripping them of their rights as citizens and denying them the recognition and respect that they deserve. This can take many forms, from denying transgender individuals the right to use public facilities that align with their gender identity to barring them from serving in the military simply because of who they are.

The Trump administration has been at the forefront of this denationalizing campaign, with President Trump himself issuing a series of executive orders and policy changes that specifically target the transgender community. From rolling back protections for transgender students in schools to banning transgender individuals from serving in the military, the administration has made it clear that they do not believe transgender individuals deserve the same rights and protections as their cisgender counterparts.

This denationalizing of transgender individuals is not only discriminatory, it is also harmful and dangerous. By denying transgender individuals their rights and recognition as citizens, the Trump administration is sending a clear message that transgender individuals are not worthy of respect or equality. This can have serious consequences for the mental and physical well-being of transgender individuals, leading to increased rates of discrimination, harassment, and violence.

It is important to recognize denationalizing for what it is: a deliberate attempt to erase the identities and rights of transgender individuals. By standing up against this harmful and discriminatory campaign, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. It is time to stop the denationalizing of transgender individuals and start respecting and affirming their identities and rights as equal citizens.
