A man armed with a handgun was arrested at President Trump’s golf course in Doral, Florida after exchanging gunfire with police officers on Friday morning. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Jonathan Oddi, entered the Trump National Doral Golf Club and began shouting anti-Trump rhetoric before opening fire in the lobby.
Oddi was reportedly ranting about President Trump and was heard yelling, “You guys are going to get me in trouble.” He also reportedly told a Doral police officer that he was willing to fight and die in Ukraine. It is unclear what motivated Oddi to target the golf club, but authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive.
According to Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez, Oddi was “neutralized” by officers and taken into custody without further incident. Despite the exchange of gunfire, no one else was injured in the incident. Perez praised the quick response of law enforcement officers, saying, “This could have been a very deadly event if it wasn’t for the heroic actions of the police.”
President Trump was not at the golf course at the time of the incident, as he is currently in Washington, D.C. for a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-In. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that the President has been briefed on the situation and is monitoring it closely.
Oddi has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder of law enforcement officers and aggravated assault with a firearm. He is currently being held without bond at the Miami-Dade County jail. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and are looking into Oddi’s background and possible motives for the attack.
The incident at the Trump National Doral Golf Club serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can arise in public places. It also highlights the bravery and quick thinking of law enforcement officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public. As the investigation continues, authorities will work to determine the full extent of Oddi’s intentions and ensure that justice is served.
